Sprint Nextel on Tuesday announced plans to increase its data charges by $10 per month for customers who activate smartphones.
In a press release, the wireless carrier revealed plans to begin assessing the Premium Data” fee beginning Jan. 30. The fee does not affect current Sprint smartphone subscribers unless they upgrade to or activate another smartphone.
Sprint said its subscribers with smartphones like Blackberrys, Androids, and Palms use 10 times more data, on average, than users of traditional phones. The charge previously applied to HTC EVO 4G, HTC EVO Shift 4G and Samsung Epic 4G devices.
Sprint served 48.8 million customers at the end of the third quarter of 2010, the third-largest wireless provider behind Verizon and AT&T.
