EMC Cuts Enterprise, Provider Barriers to Cloud Storage

Data storage giant EMC Corp. has launched the EMC Atmos Cloud Delivery Platform, which features self-service capabilities that let enterprises and service providers jump into the burgeoning cloud market.

“This new platform eliminates the time, resources and big investments that service providers and enterprises had to grapple with to join the cloud storage service arena, said Mike Feinberg, senior vice president of EMCs cloud infrastructure group, in a prepared statement. The EMC Atmos Cloud Delivery Platform is eliminating the barriers to market.”

Thats good news for channel partners wanting to offer cloud products including on- and off-premise storage, archiving and tape-cloning.

We believe these service offerings will provide significant value to customers who are looking to drive down the cost of securely storing and archiving their corporate data, said Aad Dekkers, chief marketing officer at MTI Europe, an EMC channel partner.

For Redstor, a managed services provider in the UK, the EMC Atmos Cloud Delivery Platform could not have come at a better time, said Tony Ruane, co-founder and business development director.

We have been able to add incremental cloud storage services, he said. In essence, it is giving our customers and partners a flexible model to consume our storage with all the security and scale that the Atmos Cloud Delivery Platform offers.

EMC called its tool the industrys first when it comes to self-service cloud-storage. To be sure, the platform does have several unique components. For example, theres the ability to instantly provision end-user identities; a metering module that measures end users bandwidth and storage; and chargeback and billing integration, which can prove essential when managing multitenant and multiuser environments.

Other capabilities include the integration of a policy management engine, which automatically manages the global availability of unstructured data.

EMC further has enhanced its in-house consulting services to help partners and other users get up to speed on the cloud-delivery platform. EMC Consulting Services will help customers integrate the platform into their billing, customer care, portal and other architecture.
