Computer-maker Acer is getting ready to launch what will be its first smartphone carried by a major U.S. telco. The phone business isnt new to Acer, but the company has remained relatively anonymous in the U.S. mobile market. Some small carriers have sold the products, but the companys had a much bigger presence internationally.
So if youre going to make a breakthrough, why not go big? The new device has a 4.8-inch display you might even call it tablet-like. The company says websites dont need to be adjusted or resized for the phone. Other specs include dual cameras 8-megapixel on back and 2-megapixel on front plus HSPA 14.4 and Wi-Fi. Its capable of running on Android 2.2.
No carriers are on board just yet, but at Mobile World Congress in February, an Acer executive indicated the company would like to team up with AT&T. The telco has proven that it will carry big-screen smartphones, picking up the 5-inch Dell Streak earlier this year.
Expect to see the new phone launch in April 2011 no pricing details yet.
Acer also announced three new tablet computers this week, with release dates expected in the next few months.
