Apple iPhone, Google Android Handsets Generate Most Smartphone Traffic

Apples iPhone and handsets running Googles Android mobile operating system gobble the most data traffic around the globe, according to new research from Informa Telecoms & Media.

Right now, smartphone users each consume an average of 85MB per month. Thats a significant number because, while smartphones account for two-thirds of the worlds mobile cellular traffic, only 13 percent of mobile subscribers have smartphones.

Even more significantly, the trend will create a mind-blowing 700 percent rise in average traffic per user” over the next five years, Informa found.

The traffic disparity between smartphone and non-smartphone is most pronounced in North America where 86 percent of mobile data traffic is currently generated by smartphone users, notably those using an iPhone or high-end Android devices,” Malik Kamal-Saadi, principal analyst at Informa Telecoms & Media, said in a press release.

By 2015, smartphone average traffic per user” should reach 776MB per month, Informa said.

Meantime, Western Europe will see similar rapid growth to about 736MB per month in 2015, compared to just less than 44MB per month last year. But South Korea and Japan will dominate the average traffic per user” category; theyll hit consumption of 271MB and 199MB per month, respectively, by the end of this year.

Regions such as Africa, though, will continue to see low smartphone adoption for some time, due to economic conditions. As a result, Informa said data-traffic rates wont exceed 43MB per month in 2010 and could remain as low as 13MB in some African countries.

Still, in other parts of the world, iPhone will maintain its lead for now, although Android and the new Microsoft Windows Phone 7 are expected to narrow the gap quickly. In the United States alone, Android already has surpassed iPhones iOS, NPD Group found.
