The next five years will see a surge in the popularity of mobile and cloud computing platforms for application development and IT delivery, according to a recent IBM developerWorks survey.
Of the 2,000 IT developers and specialists worldwide taking part in The 2010 IBM Tech Trends Survey, 55 percent expect mobile software application development for devices such as iPhone and Android and tablets such as the iPad and PlayBook will surpass development for all other platforms by 2015.
Additionally, the survey found that 91 percent of respondents believe cloud computing will overtake on-premise computing as the primary way organizations acquire IT over the next five years. As such, mobile and cloud computing are viewed as the hottest IT career opportunities starting next year, followed by social media, business analytics and industry-specific technologies.
Although 90 percent of the survey respondents believe it is important to possess vertical industry-specific skills for their jobs, 63 percent admit they lack the industry knowledge they need to remain competitive.
The respondents ranked telecommunications, financial services, health care and energy and utilities as the top four industries that offer the greatest opportunity to expand their careers.
