The potential of an iPhone for T-Mobile not Verizon Wireless is getting some more credence this week after a Tweet from Wired Editor-in-Chief Chris Anderson.
A T-Mobile manager casually mentioned to me that they’re going to get the iPhone 3GS (but not 4, oddly) later this year,” Anderson wrote on Twitter. Common knowledge?”
This is interesting on two fronts. First, Anderson is obviously not extremely confident about his source since he chose Twitter as the medium for the report, rather than his own publication. Second, why the 3G S? If Apple will give T-Mobile the iPhone, does it really make any sense that it would only pass along the third-generation device? It seems unlikely that a large number of people would jump to T-Mobile for an old phone, even if they dislike AT&Ts network that much, and since an iPhone for Verizon Wireless is still probably just around the corner.
A T-Mobile iPhone has always made more sense technologically than one for Verizon since T-Mobile and AT&T both operate on the GSM standard, while Verizon uses CDMA. This isnt the first time weve heard talk of an Apple-T-Mobile partnership this summer. At least two other reports have mentioned the possibility of the two companies hooking up around the time of the rumored Apple-Verizon team-up in January 2011.
