Research in Motion has announced it will host a media event next Tuesday, Aug. 3. Speculation is rampant, but most reports indicate that the Canadian company will introduce the latest version of the BlackBerry Bold the 9800 which would run on RIMs new BlackBerry 6 operating system.
The Bold 9800 is another one of these devices that has been given numerous monikers prior to its release. Some are calling it the Torch.” Expect it to have a touchscreen, but not the same touchscreen with SurePress technology that the much-maligned Storm has been criticized for. It is expected to have a physical, slide-out keyboard, a 5-megapixel camera and 4GB of storage.
The long-anticipated BlackBerry 6 OS makes touchscreens more user-friendly and offers better browsing and search capabilities, according to RIM. Developers have also promised that it will make social networking more satisfying. In addition, BlackBerry 6 gives users a new music player and interface, as well as universal search.
While this scenario is most likely at next weeks event, some are speculating that RIM might introduce a clamshell device.
RIM stock is reacting well to the rumors. After falling a couple of dollars on Tuesday, shares were up more than 3 percent at $55 as of 12:50 p.m. ET Wednesday.
