HP Launches TippingPoint Security Suite for Physical, Virtual Environments

HP has released the first fruits of its recent merger with 3Com, introducing four new security solutions as part of its Converged Infrastructure initiative. Focusing on the particular security requirements of the data center across both physical and virtual environments, the new products are designed to establish multiple layers of security for its FlexFabric data center networking architecture, especially in the virtualized world where security breaches carry a proportionately higher level of risk. All products will be marketed and sold directly, as well as through distributors and channel partners under HPs PartnerONE program.

This security suite, dubbed the HP TippingPoint Secure Virtualization Framework (SVF), is built around the TippingPoint Virtual Controller (vController), which routes all data through a filter appliance of sorts; the HP TippingPoint N-Platform Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) inspects all virtual machine (VM) traffic, whether between VMs or VMs and traditional servers. Customers can use the same security processes and tools for both VM and dedicated server traffic, and manage overall security through a single interface with full visibility and control into each environment. The vController complements HPs line of ProLiant G7 servers, which can isolate and repair memory problems on a per-VM basis, without bringing down other VMs or their native server.

The IPS is updated continuously by the HP TippingPoint Reputation Digital Vaccine service, or RepDV, which maintains a near real-time, extensive database of malicious or suspicious websites and automatically blocks traffic to these sites in both directions until access is restored manually. The database is updated every two hours by HPs DVLabs, the companys security research and development arm.

HP is also focusing on data center core security with its HP Tipping Point S1200N IPS A7500 Module, an IPS security inspection blade that integrates high-end functionality directly into HPs A7500 switches; and the HP TippingPoint S1500 SSL Appliance, a dedicated device that decrypts and re-encrypts SSL Web traffic, inspecting encrypted data for malicious content and speeding up response times, if necessary.

Taken together, these TippingPoint products are well-suited to another HP server-edge release; the HP Fibre Channel over Ethernet module for its A52820 data center switch, which integrates storage network switches along with dedicated server and storage network adapters to streamline and simplify the server edge.

The TippingPoint S-series solutions are currently available worldwide, starting at $24,995, based on configuration. Pricing is also variable based on deployment.
