IT hosting vendor The Planet has launched its Server Cloud virtualized platform. Designed to bridge the gap between simpler and more secure dedicated servers with the virtualized environment of the cloud, the company is targeting customers who want to host mission-critical online data and applications, as well as VARS and resellers that want to broaden their portfolio to include more dedicated server options.
With automated provisioning and 24×7 vendor support, the Server Cloud packs more performance punch than some virtual servers by combining dedicated and virtual resources, based on Sun storage, Intel processors and Dell servers.
The Server is running the Kernel-based Virtual Machine to enable virtualization, an open-source community standard and popular development platform. KVM supports live migration, RAM de-duplication, para-virtualized storage and network capabilities over a choice of operating systems.
Weve conducted extensive surveys with our customers about the features that are most important to them, and accordingly weve spared no expense in developing a platform thats purpose-built for web-based businesses, said Carl Meadows, senior product manager for Cloud Services at The Planet. The industry is rife with cloud services hindered by inconsistency and a lack of redundancy. By contrast, our customers count on us for high availability, rapid provisioning, seamless scalability and generous bandwidth, which theyll find in our new Server Cloud. Customers are able to fully manage all aspects of their virtual servers, as well as include managed services for the platform, which provides the best value in the business.
The Server Cloud is by default, a dedicated server, though one that resides in the cloud; customers are guaranteed fully dedicated CPU, RAM, storage and network capacity that cant be downgraded due to another customers usage. For storage, The Planet has architected separate and independent computing and storage resources for grater availability. Data is fully protected in case of host server failure. The server supports both Linux and Windows OS platforms, and customers can add CPU or RAM upgrades on the fly. Theres also a managed services option that outsources service upgrades, managed server monitoring and remediation, server security and managed backup back to the vendor.
We have a broad range of customers from vastly different industries who count on us to deliver the finest quality content management systems and applications for their websites, said Wes Byrd, CIO with Dynapp Inc., a website and application tools company. The Planet Server Cloud provides us with the highly available and scalable environment we require to respond to the expanding demands of our customers who want a cloud option.
