Apple WWDC: iPhone 4.0 Likely, Verizon iPhone Too?

Apple announced the dates for its annual Worldwide Developers Conference on Wednesday, officially beginning the countdown to version four of the iPhone — and beyond that, just when we might see an iPhone built for the Verizon Wireless network.

Apple’s WWDC will be held June 7-11, in San Francisco. While not spelling it out, the event’s Web site implies that there will be an announcement about the updated iPhone.

In a statement, Apple iPhone software SVP Scott Forstall said, “This year’s WWDC offers developers in-depth sessions and hands-on working labs to learn more about iPhone OS 4. WWDC provides a unique opportunity for developers to work side-by-side with Apple engineers and interface designers to make their iPhone and iPad apps even better.”

And what’s an OS 4 without an iPhone 4, right? Apple has used the WWDC to introduce new versions of the iPhone the past couple of years.

Of course, some of the shine has come off all of the speculation, since Gizmodo posted photos and analysis of what is supposed to be a prototype of the new iPhone. We previously reported that a new version of the phone would likely be available for purchase in June.

AT&T has had a three-year exclusive with Apple for the iPhone, but some sites are speculating that news about a Verizon iPhone will come out of the conference as well. But we’ve heard that before, leading up to any number of events, and it’s never come true. Maybe this will be the time?
