How low can you go? No, we’re not talking about Limbo, but the price of the Palm Pre and the Palm Pixi via Amazon.com. You can now order the Palm Pre Plus and the Palm Pixi Plus from the online retailer for just one cent. That’s right, one penny. One Abe Lincoln on copper (well, now, the penny’s mostly zinc). All it takes is a typical, two-year service agreement.
It’s a historic low for the Pre and its younger cousin; the former made its debut in an exclusive deal with Sprint last summer, while the Pixi made its way onto the smartphone scene last fall. So in less than a year, their prices have fallen from $199 and $149, respectively, to 1/100th of a dollar.
Verizon Wireless got into the Palm game when it launched the Pre Plus and the Pixi Plus in January, but, like on the Sprint network, sales failed to impress.
It’s too bad, because by most accounts, the Pre and the Pixi are capable phones. Many reviews have been quite favorable. But while Palm’s fortunes have faded and there’s much speculation that the company will be gobbled up by a bigger player, it’s good news for the customer, who can plunk down practically nothing for a high-tech mobile device.
