Sprint-Nextel Corp. has turned up 4G WiMAX service in several new markets this week, including Milledgeville, Ga. and Salem, Ore., as well as several cities in Texas. Texas markets include: Abilene, Amarillo, Corpus Christi, Killeen-Temple, Lubbock, Midland-Odessa, Waco and Wichita Falls.
Sprint, which is acting as an MVNO on the Clearwire Corp. network, says Sprint 4G delivers peak downlink speeds of more than 10mbps and average downlink speeds of 3 to 6mbps – three to five times faster than the 3G service offered by any carrier today, based on average download speeds.
The rollout will continue to expand as the year goes on. Sprint plans to deploy Sprint 4G service in additional markets in 2009, including Chicago, Dallas and Seattle. In 2010, 4G will launch in additional large metro markets, including Boston, Houston, New York, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.
