First Broadband Grants to Hit Streets in November

Eager to get your hands on some of that broadband stimulus money? Well, just wait a few weeks more.

Anna Gomez, a key official at the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), said Tuesday the first round of grants should be awarded in early November. Right now, the agency continues to sift through nearly $28 billion in requests; NTIA only has $4 billion in grant money to distribute.

In the meantime, NTIA must decide whether to combine the second and third rounds of applications, Gomez said.

“We want to get this program up and running as quickly as possible, while at the same time making sure that we are very careful not to have waste, fraud and abuse, and comply with the various requirements of the statute,” Gomez told FierceWireless.

Gomez was a keynote speaker at the PCIA Wireless Infrastructure show in Nashville, Tenn.
