Troubled FairPoint Applies for Broadband Grants

Despite its well-documented billing and customer service problems, FairPoint Communications has applied for $38 million in broadband stimulus grants. The company says it wants to help broadband reach unserved and underserved areas.

More specifically, FairPoint wants to extend broadband to improve service in Maine’s Aroostook County and upgrade service in Washington County. It wants to help Coos County and Grafton County in New Hampshire, as well as Essex and Caledonia Counties in Vermont.

FairPoint’s reach extends beyond New England. The company wants nearly $2 million to improve service in Missouri and northern Florida.
