In less than two weeks, AT&T will start requiring a $30 per month data plan for customers who buy a smartphone or upgrade to one. That’s on top of the voice plan. Existing customers won’t be affected unless they choose to upgrade their plan or their phone.
In a statement, AT&T justified the decision by citing how much data smartphone users consume. And by getting a bill that doesn’t fluctuate, customers will be more satisfied. The company goes on to say that most customers are already subscribing to a monthly data plan, and will not be affected when the policy goes into effect Sept. 6.
