As expected, Sprint-Nextel Corp. has launched Atlanta, Las Vegas and Portland, Ore. as 4G WiMAX markets.
The service is three-to-five times faster than current 3G speeds, offering peak downlink speeds of more than 10mbps and average downlink speeds of 3-6mbps. It is available for a $10 per month premium over current Sprint 3G mobile data plans.
The markets join Sprint’s existing WiMAX market, Baltimore. Sprint has been following in the footsteps of underlying provider Clearwire Corp., whose network it resells. Other MVNOs on the Clearwire network include Comcast Corp. and Time Warner Cable.
Sprint said it plans a plethora of new devices planned coming up soon. For now, it offers USB dongles and personal routers for WiMAX.
Sprint plans more launches this year and beyond. The following markets are included on the list to experience Sprint 4G in 2009: Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Honolulu, Philadelphia and Seattle.
