Ouch. Apple Inc. has decided to throw its competitive weight around, by pulling the plug on the rival Palm Pre’s iTunes synching feature.
Previously, the gadget would show up as an iPod in iTunes, making for easy media management. Apple now has upgraded the iTunes software to version 8.2.1, which no longer supports that feature.
Apple did say a few weeks back that non-Apple media players would be blocked from synching with iTunes in the new version, so it’s not entirely unexpected and it might not even be personal.
Palm Inc. spokesperson Lynn Fox noted to InformationWeek that Palm Pre users can either opt out of upgrading their iTunes version, use a USB port to transfer music or use a third-party app.
