Report: DOJ Mulls Investigating Telcos for Power Abuse

Sources close to the Department of Justice say the agency is in the initial stages of looking into whether big telcos like AT&T and Verizon have been abusing their power in the marketplace.

Exclusive handset deals are at the top of the list of concerns. Some argue they are an anticompetitive behavior. This isn’t entirely new – the FCC has said it will review the issue. New FCC chairman Julius Genachowki says he’s on board to review the practice as well.

The Wall Street Journal report goes on to say that the DOJ will review whether the big telcos are unfairly restricting services that other companies can offer on their networks.

The Justice Department isn’t commenting.
