Analysts: Nortel Trailed Competitors, Couldnt Catch Up

The unsurprising decision by Nortel Networks (NT) to part itself out is highlighting one major point: The telecom equipment maker had fallen too far behind its rivals to catch up.

But some analysts still are encouraging businesses to buy Nortel equipment over the next couple of months. If companies are thinking about buying Nortel gear after the current budget year, experts say it’s better to hold off. That’s because Nortel probably will sell its enterprise unit and customers will want to know who that buyer is.

That input comes a few days after Nokia Siemens Networks agreed to buy most of Nortel’s wireless assets for $650 million.
