A Piper Jaffray analyst believes that Apple and AT&T will sell about half a million of the iPhone upgrades in its first weekend of release (it goes on sale Friday). While that’s only half of the number of the second generation device it sold last year, that would far exceed sales of the Pre in its first weekend of availability. Sprint hasn’t released any official numbers, but analysts believe it was somewhere between 50,000 and 100,000 smartphones.
So why the potential decline in iPhone sales this year? Not a lot of current customers qualify for the discounts for the new model. And, as they say, it’s the economy, stupid.
