A research analyst at Avian Securities LLC is predicting Sonus Networks (SONS) will bid for Nortel Networks Corp.’s (NT) VoIP and switching assets, as well as for the entire holdings of Cedar Point Communications Inc.
Sonus boasted a little more than $386 million in cash and investments at the end of the first quarter, so, even though the company isn’t commenting on speculation, it feasibly could pay for such acquisitions.
Cedar Point is a rival VoIP switch vendor that’s struggling in the face of recession; it holds more market share among cable operators than does Sonus; thus, a merger would expand Sonus’ cable-sector reach. Cedar Point, according to reports, also isn’t talking about a potential Sonus buyout.
Meanwhile, adding Nortel assets certainly would boost Sonus’ caché and customer base.
