Microsoft, HP Pony Up Millions for New UC Platform

Microsoft Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co. are teaming up to better take on Cisco Systems Inc. in the unified communications game with a $180 million investment to develop a joint collaboration platform.

The relationship is an extension of a partnership the two already have in place. The money will go toward co-development of several new products and services, professional services, and joint sales and marketing of the revamped UC suite. HP will develop IP desk phones as well.

The two are also working on better interoperability and support for Microsoft Office Communications Server (OCS) with HP hardware platforms, along with HP’s TouchSmart Business PCs and some smartphones.
