Depending on what you believe, Verizon Wireless is working with Apple Inc. to carry the iPhone next year. Or, it might get a stripped-down “iPhone Lite,” or an enlarged version of the iPhone Touch, dubbed the “iPad.” Or, in the latest rumor, it might be teaming with Microsoft Corp. to create an iPhone “megarival.”
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the No. 1 U.S. carrier is in talks with Microsoft to be the carrier for the software giant’s product that is specifically meant to crush the iPhone – a project that is code-named “Pink.”
According to unnamed sources, the handset will be a touch-screen multimedia smartphone that will land on Verizon’s network next year. Details are few, but it will reportedly run the Windows Mobile operating system, and integrate the Windows Marketplace for Mobile, which is Microsoft’s equivalent of the Apple App Store.
The Journal also reiterated that despite the Microsoft connection, Verizon also has been in talks with Apple about partnering.
