Report: Nokia Siemens Trying to Buy Nortel Pieces

Nokia Siemens Networks is trying to buy the carrier networks division and a wireless R&D unit – which includes LTE pursuits – from bankrupt Nortel Networks Corp. (NT).

That’s according to a report published late Tuesday by the Wall Street Journal.

Nokia Siemens made the unsolicited offer last month, according to the Journal, and, if it’s accepted, would give the joint venture substantial entrée into the U.S. carrier market.

But Nokia Siemens appears to be up against Texas-based Genband for the carrier networks group, the Journal said. Genband sells gateways that Nortel also distributes and, last year, it bought Nokia Siemens’ gateway business.
