The FCC Wednesday will start tackling the thorny issue of creating a national broadband policy.
There’s mixed reaction to the initiative – some entities say the effort will involve too much government in citizens’ lives, while others say U.S. broadband deployment won’t improve without federal intervention.
The FCC is acting on mandates included in the recent economic stimulus package. Besides being tasked with helping form distribution rules for broadband buildout grants and loans, the agency has been asked to develop a national broadband policy. This could be the biggest undertaking the FCC has handled since implementing the 1996 Telecom Act.
