Verizon (VZ) appears to be attempting to keep up with the Joneses’ activity in the netbook realm. After AT&T (T) began doing the ultra-portable computer dance late last year, offering the Acer Aspire One netbook for $99.99 with a two-year contract for the AT&T data plan, Verizon sources say the carrier might begin offering netbooks as early as next quarter. Pricing, plan and device details have not yet been released.
Verizon’s move to subsidize netbooks for users should come as no surprise, and not only because of the competition presented by AT&T’s shimmy into the market. Providers undoubtedly will continue to search for new ways to up the utilization of their 3G networks, endorsing devices to increase data transmission as voice becomes more commoditized.
