Managed services, SaaS and virtualization are expected to be among the most profitable technologies for solutions providers in 2009, according to the results of the Channel Insider 2009 Market Pulse survey.
From a list of more than 30 options, nearly 40 percent of respondents picked managed services as the most profitable, followed distantly by SaaS (20.8 percent) and virtualization (18.2 percent).
Handhelds and wireless devices fell in at No. 9 with 9.9 percent. Wireless networking was at No. 15 with 7.3 percent. Voice networking was way down the list at No. 21 with only 4.2 percent citing it as one of the most profitable technologies.
Channel Insider also polled solution providers about technologies their customers are asking for. The top five were cell phones/smartphones, which was cited by 31 percent of respondents as a hot product, virtualization (24.5 percent), handhelds, wireless devices and PDAs (23 percent), SaaS (19.8 percent) and Business Management/Productivity Software (14.5 percent).
Interestingly, managed services ranked No. 6 on the hotness scale despite being cited as the most profitable for the solutions providers.
