Alvarion Ltd., a provider of WiMAX and wireless broadband networking systems, on Monday introduced its OPEN WiMAX idea, essentially highlighting the fact that its products are based on open and standards-based protocols. This lets WiMAX operators design networks using the various vendors they prefer.
Alvarions architecture already integrates products from Cisco. Both companies are members of the WiMAX Forum, the nonprofit organization that certifies the compatibility and interoperability of broadband wireless access products.
Relying on interoperable products and open standards is not a new strategy in telecom and technology. A number of equipment makers and software developers already build their products to work with any vendor, a move that lets end user customers customize applications, services and networks that work best for them.
