Ohios Public Utilities Commission today approved SBC Communications Inc.s takeover of AT&T Corp.
The Arizona Corporation Commission also is expected to act on the merger today and the California Public Utilities Commission is scheduled to vote on the issue Nov. 18.
Ohio PUC commissioners decided the merger is entirely consistent with the thrust of telecommunications advancements as well as the states goal of promoting our communications technology, PUCO Chairman Alan R. Schriber said. Together, the combination of these two companies will enhance competition with other cable, wireless, and Voice of Internet Protocol providers of communications services, with a net positive result for consumers.
SBC this week also got the thumbs-up from the FCC, and approval last week from the Department of Justice. It further has received clearance from 34 of 36 states and the District of Columbia.
