BWA vendor SkyPilot Networks (Booth 1012) has announced a series of strategic partnerships to enhance its broadband wireless offerings for the fastgrowing municipal market. It also has announced additional support for the 4.9GHz public safety frequency band, and the selection of Fujitsus WiMAX System-on-Chip (SoC) for future WiMAX mesh networking solutions.
On the partnership front, design, build and run company MetroFi will use SkyPilot equipment to provide municipalities with an all-in-one metropolitan Wi-Fi access solution at $50,000 per square mile. MetroFi already offers metro area wireless services based on SkyPilots mesh networking solution in a 15-square-mile area serving the communities of Cupertino and Santa Clara, Calif. It combines a 802.11b/g access point with SkyPilots high-capacity 5GHz mesh backhaul, using separate radios for access and backhaul to minimize interference
To address the licensed public safety markets in the United States, SkyPilot also has added support for the 4.9GHz frequency band in its gear. The 4.9GHz band has been designated for government agencies, to allow specialized mesh backhaul with Wi-Fi access for dedicated first-responder services.
Thanks to the Fujitsu agreement, SkyPilot also will add WiMAX interoperability in a wide range of licensed and unlicensed frequency bands. By placing its Synchronous Mesh Protocol on top of the WiMAX SoC, SkyPilot plans to deliver a WiMAX mesh networking solution.
Our existing broadband wireless mesh architecture is extremely well-suited to support evolving WiMAX standards, says Brian Jenkins, vice president of product management at SkyPilot. The SkyPilot systems that our service provider customers are deploying in production mesh networks already include most of the technologies defined by WiMAX, including the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing modulation technique and a timedivision duplex transmission protocol. With the Fujitsu WiMAX SoC, were leveraging a high-performance chip with the flexibility to incorporate our Synchronous Mesh Protocol while maintaining compatibility with standards-based WiMAX clients.
