Nearly three weeks after the FCC approved the proposed merger between Western Wireless Corp. and ALLTEL, Western Wireless said today its shareholders also have given the thumbs-up to the deal.
The companies expect the merger to be official as of Monday, Aug. 1, now that all entities have consented.
Through the Western Wireless acquisition, ALLTEL is gaining about 1.4 million wireless customers in 19 states. That will give the company about 10 million wireless customers in 33 states, ALLTEL and Western Wireless said in January when the planned merger was announced. ALLTEL also is adding 1.6 million international customers in six countries.
“By combining with ALLTEL, we create a large rural operator using multiple technologies with the largest footprint in the country, says John Stanton, chairman and CEO of Western Wireless. As the wireless industry continues to transform, we felt that combining with ALLTEL was in the best interests of our shareholders, customers and employees.”
Western Wireless is headquartered in Bellevue, Wash., and offers service under the Cellular One and Western Wireless brand names.
