T-Mobile, Facebook Execs Top CTO List in 2013 Compensation

A select group of technology officers in the cable and telecom industries brought home millions of dollars last year. After reviewing the 2013 compensation for hundreds of CIOs and CTOs, Janco Associates identified 29 executives who earned more than $1 million.

Neville Ray, executive vice president and chief technology officer of T-Mobile, is one of the rock stars. He earned $9.15 million last year, ranking as the second-highest paid executive on the list behind Facebook CTO Michael Schroepfer ($12.51 million), reported Janco, an international consulting firm. T-Mobile, whose recent talks with Sprint to merge have collapsed, has been performing well, courting millions of subscribers with its popular “uncarrier" strategy that eliminates postpaid contracts.

Time Warner Cable, which is being acquired by Comcast provided U.S. regulators approve the deal, also paid a handsome salary and other benefits to its EVP and CTO, Mike LaJoie. He earned $2.55 million in compensation last year, including a base salary of $650,000, ranking as the 20th-highest paid executive on Janco’s list.

Cindy Nash, EVP and CIO of Windstream, also fared well last year after earning total compensation of $1.12 million, according to Janco.

“The striking component of the compensation plans for each of the executives that made this list is that none of them got on the list with a base salary of one million," Janco CEO MV Janulaitis said in a press release.

Relatively to his other compensation, Facebook’s Schroepfer earned a modest base salary of $352,000 while T-Mobile’s Ray received a salary of $550,000, according to Janco.

Janulaitis said the firm is aware of other CIOs who earned more than $1 million, but Janco’s list only included public information.
