Want to know the fastest-growing business Internet service?

It’s videoconferencing.

Between 2013 and 2018, the number of desktop and personal videoconferencing users will grow from 37 million to 238 million, according to the latest Cisco Visual Network Index. Those figures represent a compound annual growth rate of 45 percent.

For channel partners selling connectivity, devices, systems and managed services all related to videoconferencing, that’s good news.

The increased adoption will soar alongside ever-higher increases in global IP traffic. Cisco found that said traffic will jump almost three-fold over the next five years, thanks to more people using the Internet, more devices accessing the Internet, faster broadband speeds and more people viewing video.

As quantification, Cisco said global IP traffic for fixed and mobile connections is expected to reach an annual run rate of 1.6 zettabytes, which amounts to more than one and a half trillion gigabytes per year by 2018. (What’s a zettabyte, you ask? It’s equal to 1,000 exabytes and comes before the yottabyte. If you know what any of that really means, more power to you.) In addition, 2018’s IP traffic numbers alone will exceed the 1.3 zettabytes generated around the world between 1984 and 2013.

Keep this in mind, too: the composition of IP traffic is shifting. Most of it will come from smartphones, tablets and other devices, rather than PCs, for the first time in the Internet’s history, Cisco said. And, Wi-Fi traffic will surpass wired traffic for the first time, while HD video will outpace its standard definition counterpart.
