AT&T’s software-defined network will offer its first cloud-based products in June, kicking off the first year of a six-year plan. Full-blown implementation is expected to take two to three years, with customers slowly migrating to the network.
Plans for the new network, which is replacing the current hardware-based network, were first announced in February, according to the Wall Street Journal. The transition to cloud-based software and less-specialized hardware will reduce costs for AT&T, allowing the company to offer lower-priced services to customers.
Big corporations will be able to manage and configure services on their own, saving them time and money, and AT&T will be able to update its software quickly rather than removing and installing hardware in order to upgrade its network.
