Verizon Wireless beat out its rival mobile carriers to account for 35 percent of all phone activations last quarter, more than double what T-Mobile had and nearly four times that of Sprint.

AT&T followed behind Verizon with 28 percent, while T-Mobile accounted for 15 percent and Sprint had 9 percent, according to a Consumer Intelligence Research Partners report quoted in CNET. The remaining 13 percent was made up by all other regional and prepaid carriers.

Although Verizon and AT&T had the highest activation numbers, neither showed improvement during the quarter. T-Mobile was the most improved, with its share rising 2 percent, to hit 15 percent. Sprint's share also rose 1 percent to 9 percent.

However, T-Mobile only retained about 70 percent of its existing customers, while the other three carriers each held onto about 80 percent of customers.
