Despite the push by Nokia and other manufacturers, the gap between the "haves" and the "have nots" is widening.
The latest numbers from the team at comScore show that Apple and Samsung increased their U.S. market share between August and November, while their closest – and by closest, we actually mean distant – rivals lost more ground.
comScore says first-place Apple saw its share rise from 40.7 percent in August 2013 to 41.2 percent in November. Second-place Samsung saw even better improvement, jumping from 24.3 percent to 26 percent. Motorola, LG and HTC were third, fourth and fifth, respectively, but none had more than 7 percent of the market. HTC actually fell from third place to fifth in a rough quarter.
The mass number of Android devices available helped Google gather the most operating-system share over the same time period. Despite controlling more than half of the market, Android's prevalence still rose a smidge, up from 51.6 percent in August to 51.9 percent in November. Apple's iOS, in second place, was the biggest gainer, up one-half of 1 percent, to 41.2 percent.
Mobile OS is clearly a two-horse race. BlackBerry continued to flounder, dropping from 4 percent share to 3.5 percent. Still, it maintained third place because Microsoft's Windows platform – despite getting a big media push toward the end of the year – slipped from 3.2 percent to 3.1 percent.
