Industry insiders have been critical of Apple's decision to release the less-expensive iPhone 5c this fall, but the little brother of the flagship 5s is getting a little redemption.
A new report from Kantar Worldpanel Comtech gives the 5c its props. The study says the 5c has been more popular than the 5s for people with below-average incomes.
“The cheaper 5c appeals to a broader audience than Apple usually attracts," noted Dominic Sunnebo, strategic insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.
Most importantly, on a competitive level, it's proved to be attractive to Android users who have decided to make the switch to Apple. Sunnebo says about half of iPhone 5c buyers are making the switch from Android manufacturing giants such as Samsung and LG. About four in five iPhone 5s buyers are upgrading from previous versions of Apple's iconic device.
Apple is second in global market share. The 5c might help it make strides in catching Samsung, whose share is more than double that of Apple's, due in part to the fact that the Korean giant has so many smartphones available.
