Sonus Networks has announced new multimedia enhancements to its 5000 series of Session Border Controlers (SBCs). The new enhancements are designed to eliminate communication barriers so enterprises and service providers can utilize the full potential of Unified Communications (UC).

With the newest edition of the SBC 5000 series, Sonus is introducing video interworking and embedded policy functionality, designed to deliver true multimedia SBC support for voice, video and collaboration with advanced security and session-management capabilities.

With the growing popularity of bring your own device (BYOD), network security remains a primary concern for information technology (IT) decision makers. BYOD video presents challenges to network compliance as video delivered outside the firewall without encryption, making it a hot target for theft. The Sonus SBC 5000 series verifies authentications and encrypts video communication, protecting sensitive information against detrimental security breaches.

The Sonus ePSX policy engine allows for businesses to manage multimedia sessions and centralize dial plans based on business rules and priorities. Utilizing policy, Sonus SBCs aim to ensure that a real-time path between devices is sustainable.

Meantime, Sonus also announced Microsoft Lync 2013 qualification for its SBC 5210 and SBC 5110.
