A new report says AT&T might acquire some or most of European telco giant Vodafone as soon as next year.

Sources "familiar with the situation" tell Bloomberg that the two companies are figuring out which assets would be involved in a deal. But they were also quick to add that no formal negotiations have begun.

Talk of a potential AT&T expansion into Europe emerged early this year. It's been assumed that any major domestic deal would be met with a furrowed brow from regulators who put up roadblocks to the carrier's attempts to acquire T-Mobile USA two years ago.

It was reported this past spring that AT&T approached Verizon about a four-way deal involving the two U.S. giants, Vodafone and America Movil. Verizon instead spent $130 billion to buy Vodafone's 45 percent stake in Verizon Wireless.
