iPhone 5 Bill Shock: Verizon Deals With Wi-Fi/3G Confusion

Some Verizon Wireless customers who were among the first to get the new iPhone 5 might've noticed their data use was out of control; but don't be alarmed, the carrier says, it's a glitch that has been corrected.

VzW and Apple confirmed that an error was showing data use going through the roof even when users were connected to Wi-Fi networks as opposed to cellular networks. Impacting those on 3G networks, Verizon says there is a fix – go in to the "settings" on your device and you'll be prompted to follow instructions for an "important" update, SlashGear noted. Just make sure you power your phone all the way down and restart it when finished.

Calling it "unwarranted cellular data use," Verizon has promised the charges won't show up on customers' bills.

Now America's largest carrier has the unenviable task of determining which data is actually 3G data and which isn't – likely a tall order. Customers who downloaded a whole bunch of stuff in those first few days after getting their phone might wind up benefitting from the mistake if the carrier is forced to just let it all go.

The iPhone 5 – which sports an improved camera and battery life, plus compatibility with 4G LTE networks – hit store shelves Sept. 21.
