Cisco Debuts WebEx for Private Clouds

October 16, 2012 - News

Cisco Systems Inc. announced Tuesday at the Cisco Collaboration Summit in Los Angeles enhancements to its cloud collaboration portfolio, including a new Webex Meetings Server for private clouds.

Part of the Cisco CloudVerse solutions set announced at the end of 2011, Cisco WebEx Meetings Server is targeted for global availability in fourth quarter 2012. It is designed for customers who prefer or require an on-premises offering. WebEx Meeting Server is a virtualized software solution designed for Cisco Unified Computing System servers.

Cisco said the private cloud version will offer the same WebEx user experience as the public cloud solution, including WebEx clients for PC, Mac, iPhone and iPad; high quality video; sharing, annotation, and collaboration tools; recording and playback.

The networking giant said it plans to offer integration with Cisco's UC suite in January 2013. This will extend IP telephony to conferencing, and provide escalation from a Jabber IM session to a full WebEx meeting directly from the Jabber client.

Cisco said this on-premises solution is offered as an alternative at the same time its public service is experiencing increased usage. According to Cisco, the number of registered users is up 30 percent year over year with more than 6.8 million registered users worldwide as of August. The number of meetings also is up 38 percent with 9.6 million meetings in August 2012, the company said.
