Cbeyond Inc. says it's one of the first cloud providers to earn the latest in data-center certification, Type II  Service Organization Control (SOC) .

The designation – approved by an independent auditor – applies to the company's Louisville, Ken., facility, and is important because it verifies compliance with stringent security and privacy specifications. SOC 2 is considered the second-generate data center audit standard; earlier this year, it replaced SAS 70 Type II audits as the benchmark. For VARs and agents, this means another selling point.

"It’s critical in this business to have a secure, reliable and controlled data center," said Jeff Uphues, vice president of Cbeyond Cloud Sales, in a press reelase. "Our customers’ data is of utmost importance which is why we have become one of the first companies in our industry to complete a SOC 2 examination.”

Cbeyond's cloud services target SMBs in more than 60 countries and include virtual servers, managed dedicated servers, cloud PBXs and software-as-a-service. The company sells through channel partners.
