Cox Says R.I.P. to Wireless Service

Cox Communications is getting out of the wireless phone business.

The cable giant says, effective today, it's no longer selling Cox Wireless, but will continue providing the service until March 30, 2012, giving customers time to get cell service from another company. Special offers will be available to customers to make their transition to another wireless provider easier.

All Cox Wireless customers have more than one service from the cableco; they'll get a $150 credit on their bill for every line of wireless phone service disconnected. Customers can keep their wireless devices and all early-termination fees will be waived, the company said. Wireless customers also will continue to receive their Bundle Benefit for two years.

“We understand the importance of wireless to the customer experience," said Len Barlik, executive vice president of product development and management. “Cox is looking at several options to continuously increase the value of our bundle of services."

Cox is dumping its 3G wireless service for a number of reasons: lack of wireless scale necessary to compete; the rapid development of its competitors' 4G networks; and the tough road getting access to some of the industry's best-known devices.

Cox wireless service has been available in less than half of its total coverage area, including: Hampton Roads, Roanoke and Northern Virginia; Orange County, San Diego and Santa Barbara, Calif.; Omaha, Nebraska; Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Okla.; Rhode Island; Connecticut; and Cleveland.

Cox says its television, high-speed Internet, residential phone and commercial services won't be affected by the change.
