In spite of the hype surrounding the pending launch of Apple’s iPhone 5, consumer demand remains strong for previous versions of the slick device.
In August, the iPhone 4 remained the top-selling gadget at AT&T and Verizon Wireless, according to Canaccord Genuity, a financial services firm, in a research report.
Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 5 as early as this month, although the company has not yet made a formal announcement.
In the report, Canaccord Genuity analysts T. Michael Walkley and Matthew D. Ramsay said they expect the iPhone 5 to sell well during the holiday season, “as we anticipate a strong global launch with increased distribution to new carriers including Sprint in the U.S. market."
In August, the top-selling handsets at AT&T included the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and Samsung Infuse 4G, according to the report. Verizon’s top-selling handsets were the iPhone 4, Samsung Charge 4G, and HTC Thunderbolt.
Sprint and T-Mobile USA, the third- and fourth-largest U.S. mobile operators, respectively, don’t sell the iPhone today. Several of their top-selling handsets in August are made by HTC, including the HTC EVO 3D 4G, HTC EVO 4G, HTC Sensation and HTC myTouch 4G Slide.
