More Internet users in the United States will access the Web through smartphones and tablets than through PCs by 2015, according to new research from IDC.
The number of U.S. mobile Internet users will grow by a compound annual growth rate of 16.6 percent between 2010 and 2015. Western Europe and Japan aren’t far behind, IDC said. In fact, analysts went so far as to say, “the number of users accessing the Internet through PCs will first stagnate and then slowly decline." That take sounds a bit extreme considering the number of people in the U.S. alone who work on desktop computers.
Worldwide, the total number of Internet users will grow from 2 billion in 2010 to 2.7 billion in 2015 – that’s when 40 percent of the world's population will have access to the Web, IDC said. Online advertising will keep pace with that increase, too. It’s projected go jump from $70 billion in 2010 to $138 billion in 2015.
