Artisan Infrastructure, an Infrastructure as a Service Provider and Asigra, a cloud backup and recovery software provider, have teamed up to expand cloud data backup offerings. Toronto-based Asigra and Artisan Infrastructure, based in Austin, Texas, are providing channel partners with a broader choice of flexible, efficient and affordable cloud backup services, which they can resell to their customers.

The new cloud-based services are built upon NetApp(r) storage, which according to the partnered companies, offers VARs and MSPs the ability to compete effectively with larger hosting firms. Ashar Baig, senior director of product marketing for Asigra, said in the press release that “Asigra and Artisan Infrastructure teamed up to remove the guesswork and risk for MSPs wanting to deploy cloud backup services based on high-performance NetApp storage."

According to the partnered companies, one of the primary goals of their alliance was to provide MSP and VAR partners access to the Asigra deployable solution template, which gives the MSP or VAR its own Asigra-powered vault, once the template is activated. "Now, Asigra and Artisan Infrastructure make launching new cloud backup service infrastructure as simple as right-clicking a mouse and entering a software license key," said Brian Hierholzer, president and CEO of Artisan Infrastructure, noting several Artisan Infrastructure customers have successfully deployed cloud backup based on the Asigra platform in less than one week on average.

Oli Thordarson, CEO of Alvaka Networks, a managed services provider, feels that the companies’ announcement offers little to established MSPs. “This sounds like a nice joint venture in a growing market, but this is hardly anything new. There are already established players out there providing MSP hosted cloud backup services utilizing Asigra backup technology such as Xilicore. Xilicore has been doing this for several years and they have a proven platform and established client base of MSPs. The only thing different here is the specification of the NetApp storage platform, but Asigra technology does not really care about the storage platform as it is agnostic about that," said Thordarson.

According to Artisan Infrastructure’s web site, the company offers partners’ access to a Virtual Private Data Center and a host of other services designed to empower partners to become MSPs. Artisan Infrastructure employs a wholesale infrastructure model, which is only available to registered partners, helping those partners to compete with retail cloud and infrastructure providers.
