RIM Might Unveil ‘BlackPad’ Details Next Week

While it’s almost a foregone conclusion that RIM will introduce a new smartphone – likely the Bold 9800 – at a media event next week, this might also be the chance to give details about its rumored tablet computer project.

The site Mobile Crunch is reporting that RIM just purchased the domain name, “Blackpad.com." That URL has been owned before, so it’s likely that the company had to shell out some bucks to the previous owner to get it.

Whatever new project is announced, it will almost certainly run on the new BlackBerry 6 operating system, which the company showed off in promotional videos earlier this summer. BlackBerry 6 is supposed to make touchscreens more user-friendly and offer better browsing and search capabilities.  Developers have also promised that it will make social networking more satisfying. In addition, BlackBerry 6 gives users a new music player and interface, as well as universal search. Expect to hear more details about OS 6 on Tuesday.

Getting back to the “BlackPad," the name is both simple, but a tad unoriginal, don’t you think?
