The Motorola Droid 2, the first Motorola phone to run on Google's "Froyo" – the friendly name for the Android 2.2 operating system – is set to launch in August.
The Droid 2 will be the follow-up to the original Droid, which was released in October 2009 and marketed as an alternative to the Apple iPhone. The original Droid and the Droid X, just released a week ago, have been sales successes, although not as wildly hot as the iPhone.
The Droid 2 will have a virtual keyboard, 512MB of RAM, a 5-megapixel camera, a 1GHz processor and more. Expect the price of the new phone to be around $200 with a two-year Verizon Wireless service agreement.
If you’re a fan of Droid X, this is good news for you. It’s considered likely that the Droid X will also get an upgrade to Froyo.
Wireless was a bright spot in Verizon’s earnings report, released today. Sales of Android handsets were a big reason why.
