Shares of 8x8 Inc. (EGHT) stock had jumped more than 4 percent in early afternoon trading after the company announced it has secured another patent – eight years after applying for the protection.
The business VoIP provider said the U.S. Patent Office granted a patent called “Virtual Telephone Extension.” The patent number is 7,684,554.
The technology in question routes communications through a user identifier that serves as a virtual extension number, 8x8 said. That way, users can direct their calls to the device of their choice, no matter where they are located.
So far, 8x8, which was founded in 1987, has racked up 76 patents. This latest patent contains 20 claims and was filed in 2002.
8x8’s shares had ballooned 4.32 percent by 12:43 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, trading at $1.38.
