In a letter to subscribers this week, AT&T announced it is shutting down its CallVantage Internet-based phone service.
Verizon recently made a similar announcement. The phone giants are moving away from a technology that held promise a few years ago, but has been dominated by the phone and wireless services offered by cable companies.
To use the service, customers got a small adapter that allowed them to connect their phones to a broadband Internet line. Unlimited domestic calling ran them $20 to $30 per month.
No word exactly how many CallVantage subscribers there are out there.
